Huh. I have three different writing styles.

By blog, I'm Chuck Palahniuk. By expository (rules for a roleplaying game), I'm Dan Brown, something I think says more about him than me. By fiction, I'm...

I hope it's based on the early stuff. :(

Unhappiness is re-reading the bit that I pasted in to get my judgement...and remembering the Spinners session in which Harry trashed both that piece, and me as a writer in general.

...and then realizing it really did need a lot of work.

I found several reviews from Spinners while I was packing and deliberately put them aside so I could pour over them again after rereading the pieces on which they were based. I anticipate many disappointed hand-to-forehead moments to come.

Spinners was an odd beast. It was so hard to separate what was valuable criticism from what was just mean-spirited.

True. I do have to say, though, that Spinners did keep writing at the forefront of my mind, even if I wasn't necessarily doing the writing. Seeing others' products reminded me that I needed to do more of my own. In the end, the group did wind up deteriorating into the beast you describe. A shame you didn't join earlier when more were contributing. I remember several meeting conclusions when people were fighting over who would get to contribute for the following month. Good times.

I want to hook up with a writing group again. I told Kate I aim to do that once we get settled. A group would certainly fuel my need for motivation to that end.

I agree that a good writing group is really useful in terms of keeping one's self "honest" and plugging away. Without outside input, it can be too easy to stop working on something frustration, or to shelve inspirations as "someday" projects rather than "before next tuesday" projects.
