Avatar would have been better if it had just been a National Geographic documentary on the planet Pandora and the Na'avi people. As it was, I was well entranced by the world and its spectacle. But as soon as the credits rolled, I started thinking of all the giant holes in the paper-thin plot.

The problem with the Hero's Journey is, if you don't explore the character of the Hero undergoing the journey, it's quite shallow. But - paste absolutely mind-boggling visual effects on top of that shallow, and you get something that's still pretty amazing to see. But how much harder would it be to have a better script?

Memorandum to Hollywood: Your script is the least expensive part of production. Spend a little money and get really good writers, and you'll get positive results out of scale to your expenditure.

It's my understanding Cameron wrote the script himself, which probably explains its flaws. Maybe memo to director: you are not a writer would be apropos.

He should have spent a little money and gotten a good writer. Among other things, it would have avoided pop-culture references that would dated in 145 years. "Meals on wheels" would, I'm sure, not be relevant by then.

Did you see it at an IMAX theater? I understand it's new 3D technology that's really eye-popping. I just wonder if it's meant to be seen in IMAX only or anywhere for the 3D experience.

I saw it in IMAX. It was indeed eye-popping. Like I said - until the credits rolled, I was absolutely on board.

Cool. Don't know when I'll be able to get to an IMAX to see it, but it sounds like that's the way to do it... even if the story is subpar.
