And next, Paul Giamatti as Wonder Woman.

He can't be Captain America. He's already Hancock. Wouldn't that be like a guy doing a Coca Cola ad and then turning around and doing a Pepsi ad?

Also, Elizabeth made me watch Samurai Girl with her and now I see that Brendan Fehr should be Cap.

Aaron Eckhardt. Definitely.

I love Aaron Eckhart. But isn't he too old for the part? Honestly, Brad Pitt really would be perfect- but that's an age issue, too.

No, Brad Pitt would be WRONG. Cap is a goody-two-shoes. Aaron Eckhart was great as the do-gooder in Batman. Cap's an adult, I think Eckhart is exactly the right age.

Brad Pitt is a prima donna. He's good looking, but he's not inspiring, he's not selfless, he's not charismatic, except in a broody, prettyboy way. Brad Pitt as Thor...that I'd buy!

Brad Pitt isn't bulky enough.

Um... that's actually perfect.

He's a damn good actor. He's a damn good physical actor. And he's... he's just perfect.

Wow. Why didn't I think of that?

Because it's completely wrong. That's why. Aaron Eckhart.

Captain America isn't from Philly. Captain America is from New York. Of course.

Or maybe it's because his origin is inextricably interwound with WWII, a time when the U.S. Army was not integrated. This is an important fact, one that gets glossed over in the movies - and making Captain America black would gloss over it in a truly ridiculous way, one that excuses the spirit of the times, which explicitly wouldn't have allowed a black man to be the sort of figure that Captain America is. By pretending that it would have been possible for Captain America, in WWII, to be black and still be Captain America, we abrogate our duty to remember that our society has not always been egalatarian and fair; that it still isn't, in many ways.

Possibly also, they're rewriting Cap's story to take him out of WWII, which I would also strenuously object to. Cap's value as a symbol, and as a moral authority, has always derived a lot of strength from the "Captain America = punching nazis" formula. He wasn't always the strongest or most powerful, but he never, ever, failed to see right from wrong. WWII is written in America's psyche as the last moral war, the last patriotic war, and right or wrong - Captain America is a symbol of that moral certainty.

Add to that - Will Smith doesn't bring something so amazing to the role that it makes it worth entering into a gigantic dialogue about race. Even if it weren't an issue (and I want to go on record, I really like Will Smith, and think he's become an amazing actor, and by all accounts, a really decent person, too) Smith isn't the right guy to be Cap. Cap is brave, inspirational and larger-than-life, and Smith can be all those things - but he's also a square. Will Smith is waaaaay too cool to be Captain America. He can't not be cool. It's his thing, his superpower, his charisma.
