Overheard in LA

Table full of high-maintenance West Side bitches at La Salsa. You know the type; immaculately done up, thin, heavily made up, beautiful, carefully done hair, perpetually sour expression on their joyless faces due to spending all their time at the gym or shopping, rather than enjoying any of life's non-materialistic pleasures. One says to the other; "Dating sucks. The other night I went on a date, and the guy I'm out with asks me "What do you think of exisistentialism?" What a loser. Like I've cared about that since freshmen philosophy. Hello?"

She was right about one thing - dating her would suck.

Again - "insecure poser" is something that you (plural) imagined out of a very small sample of a conversation. I can think of lots of examples where someone might ask about existentialism in a perfectly valid context.

But bear in mind - the woman didn't say "What a pretentious jerk." what she said was "Hello? I haven't cared about that since freshman philosophy!" No evidence that she thought he was pretentious, plenty of evidence that she didn't care about, and was annoyed by, intellectual conversation.

You (plural) glossed over that entirely - pinning this wholly anonymous man with your own disdain; refusing to believe that it's even *possible* it was a legitimate question in the normal course of conversation. To turn your point on its ear: i can easily imagine myself asking any one of the women on my f-list what she thinks of existentialism. Of course, now I know not to - I'll just ask her what she thinks of Prada or Manolo; safer territory.

Prada is strictly for High maintenance West Side types.

Au contraire. Choo's shoes are definately a bit more declasse than Manolo's and Pradas have a gravitas that neither Manolos or Choos can match. I think you'd find a Prada wearer far more likely to respond positively to being asked about existentialism. - the Manolistas are all about money, the Prada partisans at least cover it with a veneer of eurocentric culture.

I didn't gloss over that and specifically mentioned that if the question was not out of nowhere, then it was perfectly valid and she obviously wanted nothing to do with that line of conversation.

Something else to consider is that intellect is not usually the reason a man is called a loser...it usually is another trait that gives him that label. Sure, it's easy for a geeky guy to claim that women aren't interested in him because he's brainy, but in almost every case I can't point directly to another reason why he's without a girl and that reason has nothing to do with his intellect.

...except in this case, in which it is explicitly what it is the woman is complaining about.

Actually, she was complaining about being asked to speak about philosophy, which doesn't necessarily mean that she was complaining about his overall intellect. As I mentioned before, she might just abhor philosophy.

Given the context of her statement, it seems clear that she does in fact abhor philosophy. Not because she is some sort of philosophobe, but rather, because she is vapid.
