My boss and his boss are both out on vacation today. That leaves me as HNWIC (Head Nerd What's In Charge).
I figured it was going to be an easy-peasy cool and breezy kind of day - move my cube to my new digs, skate out a little early, cats-away-mice-will-play-quake kind of thing.
I stopped for a bracing cup of the morning IQ potion and a relaxing read of "Treason's Harbour", and rolled in on time-ish but a little late. I've been in early since our new blue-shirted masters took over.
I walk into ...pandemonium! The power distributor blew up, and took the server room's cooling down with it. Temperatures are sky-rocketing, servers are crashing, cats and dogs sleeping together, human sacrifice, mass hysteria!
Nah. We made a list of non-critical machines, split them up between us ops guys, and shut 'em down. We got in touch with the building managers, who re-routed some extra AC to our server room - found out the power box was no longer under warranty, but got on the phone to the manufacturer to find out a mad-science fix to get it back up. Just as we were doing that, the CEO wants updates, a contractor is hired to make a permanent fix, and temp in the machine room stabilized. A little fidgeting with fans and temporary cooling, and we got it stable in there. One of the other techs got in a bit of a spat with the building maintenance guys, but we calmed everyone down, and told them to go throughme for anything in the future. While sending out the update to the company, I filled out my new insurance forms, and started packing my cube - and bellowed "THIS. IS. SPARTA!"
It's good to be reminded of how a crisis sharpens the attention, increases one's mental acuity, and brings out the best.
