Such Great Heights

... and then I discovered that the door leading to the roof does NOT have an alarm on it.
And I really CAN go up on the roof, whenever I want.
And see to the end of the world.
And up and down Venice Beach.
And way into Los Angeles.

I sincerely hope that your roof allows you to look at the beautiful side of the world. Then again, Heights put all things non-beautiful so nicely into relation, small scale trouble on the canvas of great life.

Take care around the edges, just in case you're having a windy day :)

I once lived on the top floor of a three story building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This was back before Greenpoint was all gentrified and the flat was a complete dive- but the roof access ladder was right outside my door at the top of the stairs and more or less my own private domain. Greenpoint may have been ugly, but the view at night from the roof was amazing! I was near the East River so I could see the nearby Queensborough Bridge and midtown Manhattan.

There is nothing, but nothing, like New York City at night.

Chicago at night? Compare and contrast.

Nope. Sorry. Not even close.

Chicago is a great city and I enjoyed living there. I had a tiny studio apartment in what the real estate people optimistically call "Gold Coast-adjacent"- and that was a far better living arrangement than Greenpoint! And for a view I had a large elm tree outside my window, which was lovely.

Chicago is not very different from any number of large cities with tall buildings. I think that it doesn't have the same magic or energy as Manhattan, especially at night when it is comparatively quiet.

Hmm. I'd always thought of Chicago as having all the big city charm of Manhatten, with none of the filth. Drawbacks: outrageous winter weather.
