superhero

I have a geekly deficiency. I don't have a favorite superhero.

As a kid, I read a lot of comics - this is simply obligatory for nerds, so please, don't all gasp in shock and surprise at once. My favorite titles were probably X-men and the Avengers. I read a lot of Iron Man, Hellblazer, Batman, New Mutants ... I was definitely a fan of the muties. But I didn't have a single hero with which I particularly identified. I recognize that this is a failure on my part, and I've been thinking (and actively discussing with The Hobbit) who my favorite hero ought to be. I'm sort of leaning towards Captain America - he's basically human (albeit peak human), but through his patriotic commitment and relentless discipline to being a master combatant, he still mixes it up with super-powered baddies and comes out on top. Plus, everyone likes Cap, and kinda listens to what he says. And he beat the snot out of a lot of Nazis, and you know, that's just cool. I like Green Lantern, too - because his power is effectively only limited by his imagination... whatever he can dream up he can do, as long as it's green. Man, if I had one of those rings, I'd be dangerous - I'd think up some pretty odd (and green) stuff, I tell you.

Still, I don't have a particular favorite superhero. I'm willing to take your recommendations in the comments, so long as you have some sort of justification.

Also, I took a "which superhero are you" quiz, and for the sake of politeness, I will put the results behind a cut.

I like Spidey fine - but there's this guy I know and really loathe who is a big Spider-man fan. So, he can't be my favorite. (For the same reason, Batman is out. Also, Superman is boring, so don't pick him.)

The Shadow should be everyone's favourite superhero!

Is he really a superhero? I guess, I mean - he has the power to cloud men's minds (as does any decent pair of boobies, so it's not THAT super...) and he fights crime, and has a secret identity.

Odd that there were nevery any Shadow comics.

There were Shadow comics, in fact! i know some came out in the 80's, or maybe early 90's. I have read them! There were a couple different series, and I am sure there were some previous runs as well...

Huh. I think of the Shadow as being a radio serial guy. though so was Superman, so that doesn't really mean anything. (I know you're the expert on the Shadow)

Amen to that! He knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men.

Though, when it comes to pulp heroes, I have an obvious favorite.

I always wanted to read Captain America, but my dad said Steve Rogers was a pussy. He only bought me Punisher comics, and sometimes Spider-man as a special treat when I'd been REALLY good.

A blind person whose super power is to see? Amazing!

That's not fair, but I just like to mock nephandi

Hear that? I think Zatoichi, Toph, and Matt Murdock all want to have a word with you.

I've always been a Green Lantern from DC and Wolverine from Marvel (before all this new manga-zation crap) fan.

I think Green Lantern is a good match for you. Or you might want to consider Spider Jerusalem, who, although admittedly more of an antihero than superhero, is pretty kickass in his own right, AND a writer to boot.

And don't leave out literary superheros like Tarzan from your list.

Also, I find this quiz suspect. It scored me at 50% Superman and only 35% Batman (my personal favorite) so its clearly broken.

Did they ever do a Solomon Kane comic? He's another pulp-era hero, from Bob Howard. A puritan swordsman who fights pirates and zombies and all sorts of crazy stuff in ye Ren-Faire Tymes.
