I am a leaf on the wind

I'm doing some technical writing at work - whenever I have to concentrate on something, I turn on the iPod and focus. I've found a bunch of great podcasts lately, and downloaded every single one of "The Signal" which is about Firefly/Serenity.

The most recent episode is post-Serenity, so they're talking about that, with spoilers. And there's a lengthy meditation (by Tracy Hickman, of Dragonlance fame) about "Why Wash? Why you bastard, why??"

And you know, when they play the sound clip, "I am a leaf on the wind. Watch how I soar!" I got all choked up. I'm STILL upset that Wash died. Still, I get all misty-eyed when I think about it. On one hand, I'm really mad because... well, Wash! Poor Wash! But on the other hand ... that's some good film-making. A month later, I'm still upset.

Joss Whedon knows how to make it hurt.

I am not complaining, or anything, I'm just saying.... people who might be spoiled by this are not going to necessarily know you are talking about Serenity ;)

Wash's death was amazingly well executed. I was impressed with Whedon's Mad Storytelling Skillz.

See, I'm a perverse man who enjoys character death, but what struck me about Wash's death was that I definitely did not see it coming. Book, yes. Wash? Not so much.

And it was so brutal and so sudden. There was no time to mourn or even think about it, because the Reavers were RIGHT ON THEIR TAIL. And they're barricading their final stand room, and I just kept thinking, Wash is dead. Nothing is sacred anymore. They could all die.

Yeah - that was the killer, that it was so sudden and unexpected. Book dying was practically a foregone conclusion. But Wash? I was shocked... and that's part of what made it effective.

Honestly, I figured he was going to kill them ALL off, which would have been really brave. The fact that I believed he'd do it shows that Wash's death did what it was meant to do - make it clear anyone could go, at any time.
