When I pulled out in the opposite direction, I saw that the setting sun to the West was obscured by a massive black cloud, and clearly not a could of natural origins, either. It turned the sunset into a bloody scab across the horizon, a barely healed wound. The geeky part inside of me thought, "Whoa, Sauron is attacking." 'Cause yeah, it looked like that.
I went downtown, and did the things I had to do - and by the time I was driving home, I had hoped the traffic would have cleared because I'd be heading NorWest this time, instead of SouEast. When I crested the Hollywood Hills on the 101, I saw this, glowing red wyrms, writhing across the distant hills. The line of baleful red was just visible through the night and smoke. (That picture was taken by Paul Gofberg, a friend who lives pretty close to the fire.) Simi Valley and Chatsworth (No! Not Chatsworth! The porn is burning! The pron is burning!) are having bad brush fires. The rainy season last year (hahahaha. They called it rainy!) let lots of brush grow over the summer, and now it's posing a fire hazard.
It's fairly well under control, but now - 24 hours later, I can smell smoke, and there's smoke curling around the building where I work. I hope everyone's okay (I checked with my cousin in Simi Valley, and he's okay, and so's his house.) . And I hope the fucking traffic isn't too bad.
