Train Accident

The train wreck in LA is on the way of my morning commute to work. It was only a few blocks from where I work. It was in the parking lot of the Costco that I go to in Burbank.

It was all very surreal - we would look up at the TV, and there would be an interesection I cross, twice a day - littered with train parts and injured people. The train itself is the very one that my cousin takes into work when he doesn't drive in from Simi - fortunately he wasn't in the studio today. He normally drives anyway, but ... it could have been otherwise.

I'm impressed with the courage and selflessness of the Costco employees, who ran out when they heard the crash, immediately tried to help anyone in the wreck, and attacked the fire in the wreckage with extinguishers from their store until the Fire Dept. arrived. That's impressive and brave, and they are to be commended.

Needless to say, traffic in LA, always wretched - was abysmal this morning. It could have been a lot worse, and thankfully only ten people died. It's horrific and tragic that the accident occurred, especially since it was caused by one man trying to end his own life .. but many more might have died, and the injuries sustained by others could have been far worse. The man trying to kill himself failed to do so, I might add - and is currently in custody.

I heard about it on the radio this morning. They said it was near the 5 in Burbank/Glendale, so I figured I'd better take the 101 in, instead of the 5, like I normally do. Atlernatively I could take Victory Blvd straight in, which sometimes is the best, even with the traffic lights. Then they say the wreck was on Victory Blvd, at a Costco - and I realized I knew exactly where it was, and had been there many times myself.

A strange and tragic day.
