I had an errand at the bank, and there's a branch near the beach. So, it being a bright Saturday with a blissfully free agenda - probably the last one until 2013, Blink and I decided to go on a ramble.
We covered familiar environs right down to the beach, and walked down the walk-only street I used to live on. When we got to my old apartment, Blink peered over the brick wall to see what was going on. Actually the building next to it, but he stopped at the gate to my old place "this one, right?" They'd raised the outside fence so he was curious to see behind it when we got next door.
Moving on to the beach - bright blue sky, rolling surf, broad strand. And vendors and artists hawking their wares all along the way. I so miss the energy and loopy vibe of living right at the beach.
My errand done we walked back through the neighborhood, original Craftsman cottages nestled cheek-by-jowl with forbidding modern glass-and-concrete brickhouses. Palm trees and flowers everywhere, and everything in bloom. Strange people on bizarre errands, and painted on the sidewalk, odd little aphorisms like "I cried in yoga today" (You never would, I swear.) and "Don't Panic."
It was very bracing to go back down to the old 'hood, even if it's just a few blocks, it's just inconvenient enough that I don't go down too often. Not often enough, anyway!
Blink still knows the way. It was a good walk. I think once my two weeks is up at work I'll paint some little messages of my own on the sidewalks. "I love you stranger." (punctuation intentional) and "Fair winds follow foul." Maybe some others too, suggestions welcome.
