Cap Gun Smell

Boingboing has an article about toy gun culture. It's not the point of the article at all, but the writer mentions the acrid smell of cap guns.

Suddenly, I felt like I could actually smell it. Those curling red strips of paper, with the little dots of gunpowder. The black smear of expended squibs - and that sweet, smokey smell.

Funny how close to hand those scent memories are - how vivid the impression is. And how quick the rush of nostalgia is.

Pop! Pop pop pop! I loved playing with caps.

The little red plastic daisy-wheels were a new-fangled and entirely sub-standard gimcrackery.

I have used both during my lifetime. Most notably, my brother & I didn't shoot guns with the caps, we just resorted to hitting the caps with a hammer.

That was the preferred method for disposing of mis-fires, to be sure.
