Music Monday, Early 90's Summer Music Edition
It's about 1990, and I'm driving this crappy Renault. It's early Summer and hot and humid, but the night has slightly cooled the air. The tape deck (that plays cassettes!) is slightly wonky, and plays everything just a little too fast, so every tape I've got I mostly listened to slightly up-tempo and slightly higher pitched.

I'm on my way out to Audubon, PA and the windows are down. I'm listening to "Songs to Learn and Sing" by Echo and the Bunnymen. And this here is one of my favorite songs to sing at the top of my lungs as I drive just a little faster than is safe. I am 18 years old, just about to turn 19. I haven't a clue about how the world works, and no particular plan for the future.

Just to drive. And to sing.

That was a great album, wasn't it?

I, too, had a Renault in 1990. My dad got it from a friend of his and drove it out to Alexandria, VA from California. It was a Renault Fuego that broke down... A lot. I was just a kid and had just started flying for Pan Am at the time. At least three times I bought parts for that car from the dealership in Montparnasse while on Paris layovers. It was cheaper and faster than ordering parts in the states.

That's awesome! I actually had a Renault Alliance. And honestly, it never broke down! I got in an accident and scrapped up the fender something fierce, but I drove it for another year afterwards before trading it in at one of those "All trade-ins worth $1000" dealies.

It was underpowered, unlovely, and very small, but it was as reliable as Republican sex-scandals.

"...it was as reliable as Republican sex-scandals."

That's pretty reliable! My Fuego was actually very sporty and it was turbo! It also required a $400.00 marine battery that had to be (you guessed it!) special ordered.

It ultimately ended it's life on the side of the Long Island Expressway a couple of years later after I had moved to New York.

Zut alors! You were one of those eight year old kids who was better at video games than me, even then!
